Overview
UHMW (Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene) has a molecular weight 10–30× that of standard HDPE, which translates to dramatically higher abrasion resistance, lower friction, and better impact toughness at low temperatures than any other thermoplastic. UHMW outlasts nylon, acetal, and most metals in sliding and abrasive contact applications. The self-lubricating surface means parts run dry without added grease. UHMW machines with sharp woodworking tooling — dull bits will melt rather than cut. It does not bond with most standard adhesives; mechanical fasteners or thermal welding are required for structural connections.
Key features
- Highest abrasion resistance of any thermoplastic — outlasts metals in many sliding-contact and abrasive applications
- Self-lubricating surface runs dry without grease or oil lubrication
- Extreme impact resistance at temperatures below -40°F — does not become brittle under cold or impact
- Chemical-resistant to most acids, alkalis, solvents, fuels, and food-grade cleaning agents
- Low coefficient of friction against steel, UHMW, and most other plastic materials
- Available in Natural and Black in 1/4" and 1/2" × 48" × 96"
